The Samsung Galaxy S9 is a tremendous smartphone and despite slow sales, it’s still owned by huge numbers of people around the world. The phone has fantastic performance, performs incredibly well in low-light, and boasts world-class biometric security. That isn’t to say it doesn’t have its problems, however. Galaxy S9 problems are many and varied, just like on any other model, but that doesn’t mean you need to get a replacement.
We’re experts in phone repair and know the common bugbears that plague the Samsung S9. A lot of these have easy fixes, and we’re here to show you how to get your phone back in working order.
Ready to solve your Samsung S9 issues? Then keep reading!
Common Display Problems
Some of the most widespread Galaxy S9 problems are rooted in the display. Two of the worst issues are the so-called “black crush” issue and a problem with the screen dimming. Let’s take a closer look.
The Black Crush
What is a black crush? It’s a set of S9 issues where the screen has problems rendering darker spots on videos and videogames.
It may show black blocks instead of crisp black regions on the screen, for instance. While Samsung has done their best to solve these issues, it can still pop up from time to time.
The best way to solve this is by downloading an app called Screen Balance. This lets you configure the screen’s brightness in minute ways, which can solve the issue.
Samsung Galaxy S9 Screen is Too Dark
Another common problem is where the S9 dims its screen too much. This leaves you with a screen that is very hard to use.
To solve this, you will need to do a factory reset. The issue is caused by importing settings from an old device that used night mode. When you restore after resetting, do not restore the old settings.
Slow Battery Charging
One of the most frustrating Samsung Galaxy S9 problems is slow charging. Some users have reported that their battery takes an age to charge. This is frustrating for all concerned.
This often comes down to the phone’s fast charging feature not being turned on. To turn it on, follow these steps:
- Go to Settings
- Open the battery settings
- Enable the “fast charging” option
- Next time you charge your phone, the lock screen should report fast charging
Common Galaxy S9 Problems With Connections
When you own a smartphone, you want Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to be in top working order. Unfortunately, some users have been reporting problems with all three!
Wi-Fi Problems
The most frustrating Wi-Fi problems on the S9 revolve around dropping connections and not being able to find networks. This problem can often be solved by restarting and resetting your router.
If this doesn’t work, then it may be a problem with your phone. To solve this, open up your S9’s Wi-Fi settings and long-press on the network you’re having issues with, then forget the network. Reconnect to the network and this should fix the issues.
S9 Issues With Bluetooth
Are you experiencing problems with finding and connecting to Bluetooth devices on your S9? An update fixed a lot of these issues, but they do sometimes recur.
To fix this issue, follow these steps:
- Go to Settings
- Go to Apps
- Find the Bluetooth app
- Clear your cache
- Restart your phone
You will need to reconnect to the devices after this, as clearing the cache deletes all existing pairings. This usually fixes the S9’s issues with connecting to Bluetooth devices.
Galaxy S9 Camera Problems
The Samsung Galaxy S9 has one of the best cameras in the world of smartphones. The last thing you want is camera problems stopping you from taking the crisp pictures and videos that you paid for.
Stuttering 4K Video
When you record videos in 4K, are you experiencing stuttering videos that hitch up? If you are, you aren’t alone.
The most likely cause behind these Galaxy S9 problems lies with a slow SD card. If your phone can’t write to the SD card fast enough, the video won’t be as smooth. You will need to buy another SD card with a write speed of at least 30 MBps.
If your SD card does support a high write speed, the problem could be with electronic image stabilization. Turning EIS off in the camera settings eliminates this issue for some users.
Dark Slo-Mo Videos
Are you having problems with recording in the 960 fps slo-mo mode? Some users report that the videos that are produced are too dark.
If this is happening to you, then good news, it’s an easy fix! First off, make sure that your phone has been updated, as Samsung and Google’s updates have fixed this issue for the most part. If you’re still having problems, follow these steps:
- Open Settings
- Go to Advanced Features
- Turn off Smart Stay
After you’ve done this, take a video and see if the issue is resolved.
Calls Being Rejected Automatically
Is your Samsung Galaxy S9 rejecting calls automatically? Some users have reported this frustrating bug and there are a couple of ways you can fix it.
Turn Off Easy Mute
Easy mute is a convenient way to mute calls and alarms, but it’s been cited as causing this issue. To turn it off, go to Settings, then Advanced Features. If it’s already off, toggle it off, then turn it on.
Turn Off Edge Lighting
Edge lighting is another common culprit for this issue. To turn off Edge Lighting, follow these steps:
- Open Settings
- Go to Display
- Go to Edge Screen
- Go to Edge Lighting
- Hit the settings button in the top-right
- Open and turn off quick reply
