iPhone Charging Port Not Working? Here’s What You Can Do

It could happen to anyone. You’re plugging in your phone for the night with an alarm set for work, but in the morning… silence. Somehow, your iPhone didn’t charge overnight- your iPhone charging port is not working. What happened? And how can you fix it?

There are plenty of simple solutions that won’t break the bank.

Checking the Charging Cord

One simple repair you can make is by checking the cord itself. Is it damaged?

If there is no apparent issue, try cleaning both sides of the port with a dust rag; any dust or debris on the outside of the cord could be causing the issue. 

If this doesn’t help and the iPhone charging port is not working, you can also try cleaning the inside of the port with a dry rag as well. Once this is done, try plugging it in again.

If none of this works, there is a quick and easy test to find out if the problem is your charging cord.

If you have another cord available, plug it into the same outlet and give it a test- if this one works, great! Now you know the problem. 

If you don’t have a spare available, or if it also doesn’t work, you can always purchase a new charging cable instead. 

My Accessory Isn’t Supported?

Receiving an alert such as “this accessory isn’t supported” is a surefire way to know that your charging cord is experiencing issues. 

If cleaning the device doesn’t help, then a soft restart of your iPhone might be needed; this can clear the alert and fix any issues. 

Should that not help, either, making sure you have the latest installation of iOS is another possible solution. This can be done by going through settings > general > software update to install the latest version. 

This fix will require you to be connected to WiFi, and will require you to have your iPhone plugged in for the duration of the installation. 

Let Your Phone Charge Longer

It may seem obvious, but in an age filled with technology, it’s easy to get impatient.

If you aren’t giving your phone the time it needs to charge properly, especially if it recently died, then you may be losing power much faster than expected.

Allowing your phone to charge for longer periods of time is an easy solution.

Changing the Power Source

If a new charger cord doesn’t work, try changing the outlet you use. 

If you are using an adapter, switch to a new one; if you are using a power strip, ensure that it is on and working properly, or switch to a new one; or move to a new outlet altogether. 

Similarly to your charging cable and charging port, an outlet can become bogged down with dust and dirt. Moving to a new location is an easy way to detect the problem.

Cool Down Time

Should your phone still be struggling to keep its charge after the above fixes, a more in-depth look of your phone might be needed. 

If you use your phone often, then the battery may be overheating. By taking breaks from your phone, as well as keeping it out of sunlight in cooler areas, you will be able to maintain your phone’s battery life.

A clear sign that your phone may be struggling with overheating is that it won’t be able to get past an 80% charge. This is due to a feature in iPhones that prevents them from becoming too warm, leaving them without a full charge. 

The best temperature for your iPhone to keep it from overheating it between 32-95 degrees Fahrenheit (0-32 degrees Celsius).

If your battery continues to suffer even after allowing it to cool down, the battery itself may need replacement or repair. There are professional companies that will repair your iPhone battery for you, or you can go directly through Apple and have a new battery installed.

Remove Your Phone Case While Charging

iPhone cases are handy, sure, but they can also be big and bulky. Sometimes it can prevent your charging cable from plugging in properly.

By removing the case, not only will you give the cord easier access, but you will also prevent your phone from overheating inside its case. 

Restarting Your Phone

Sometimes, all your iPhone needs is to shut down for a bit. By restarting your phone, this could allow it to fix its issues internally. If a regular restart doesn’t help, then a hard reset may be required. 

Hard Reset

In the case that your phone has died and won’t get a charge, or if none of the above solutions are working, a full reset could be needed. In this situation, you have a few options for the hard reset. You could either:

1. Reset your phone manually. The steps for this are: press and release the volume up button: press and release the volume down button: and press and hold the side (power) button until the Apple logo appears. 

or

2. Connect your phone to your computer for repairs. Once your phone is plugged into your computer, you can open iTunes and follow the above steps. Hopefully, you will get the option to Restore or Update your iPhone; if so, select update to install iOS without losing your data. 

After resetting your phone, leave it to charge for at least 30 minutes.

The Dreaded Switch Joy Con Drift: How to Repair It

There’s a lot to like about the Nintendo Switch, and the recent pandemic has given everyone the perfect excuse to enjoy the popular console — assuming you were able to buy one before they sold out. But all that extra playtime does have a dark side: There’s a good chance you’ll fall victim to the dreaded Switch Joy Con drift, which is reportedly a “matter of when, not if.”

If your controller seems to have a mind of its own, inputting commands when you’re not even in the same room, then your Joy Con may require some repair. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to fix your drifting sticks no matter your tools or budget.

Repair your Joy Cons and get back in the game. Here’s how you can restore your Joy Cons.

1. Recalibrate the Control Sticks

Don’t spring for your wallet when you first notice the signs of Joy Con drifting. It may not be a hardware issue at all. Maybe all your Joy Con needs is a quick recalibration.

Before you recalibrate the Joy Con in question, remove the device from your Nintendo switch. Find System Settings then scroll down to Controllers and Sensors. In this menu, select Calibrate Control Sticks.

The software will walk you through a variety of tests. With your hands away from the Joy Con, you’ll notice a reticule with a plus sign. If you see a dot instead, press the X button to begin the recalibration process.

Recalibrating is as simple as following the on-screen directions. Once the calibration process is complete, your Joy Con should be working again as intended. Take it for a spin by testing it in the game where you first experienced trouble.

If you’re still noticing an unintended drift, it may still be possible to save your device without a major intervention.

2. Clean the Joy Con

The verdict is out on why, exactly, Joy Con drift is so prevalent. The leading theory is dust or debris slips under the thumbstick and inhibits normal functioning.

When you know you’re dealing with a hardware issue, cleaning the control stick should be your first plan of action. It’s non-invasive, and compared to other repair techniques it doesn’t introduce a great deal of risk. It may not always fix your device, but things aren’t likely to go wrong, either.

First, apply contact cleaner or 70% isopropyl alcohol onto a Q-tip. Total saturation is fine, but you don’t want the Q-tip so wet that it’s dripping. The moisture can damage your Joy Con.

At the base of your thumbstick is a protective rubber cap. Worm the Q-Tip beneath this layer of rubber and work your way around. Once you’re happy with your coverage, rotate the thumbstick in alternating circles to ensure the cleaner is evenly distributed.

Now be patient. Wait 15 to 30 minutes before testing your device.

If you’re lucky, your Joy Con should be behaving normally once again. You may have to repeat the process in the future should Joy Con drift return. When cleaning the thumbstick doesn’t get the job done, you’ll have to turn to more invasive repair options.

3. Contact Nintendo

You’ve done as much as you can without invalidating the warranty. If you aren’t a hardware expert, you may want to leave the repairs up to Nintendo.

So long as your Joy Con is within its one-year warranty, you shouldn’t experience any complications. Though, as rumor has it, Nintendo repairs Joy Con drift if it’s outside of warranty, too. Just note that it’s not necessarily a sure thing.

Of course, even if you do qualify for free repairs, Nintendo doesn’t guarantee they can replace an unfixable Joy Con if yours is limited edition. You’ll also be waiting for several weeks — or longer, as the pandemic has slowed down Nintendo’s repair services.

4. Use a Replacement Thumbstick

Technically, you can replace a drifting joystick without outside help. Note that doing so will avoid your Joy Con’s warranty. You should only attempt this procedure if you have a good sense of hardware repair or you don’t mind if your Joy Con breaks in the process.

The entire process is too complicated for this article, but you can find several videos online. All you’ll need is a replacement thumbstick and a few basic tools.

Even if you follow the directions exactly, the new thumbstick may not repair your Joy Con’s problem. You’ll also introduce plenty of dust to the interior of your controller which can cause some trouble in the near future.

Consider this process as the nuclear option. It’s not as easy as PS4 repair.

5. Get a New Joy Con

If you can’t fix it yourself and Nintendo won’t accept your repair request, you may be tempted to purchase a new Joy Con. This is the most expensive option by far.

Buying a new Joy Con is also a significant challenge, as many other Switch users deal with drifting issues and buy new Joy Cons rather than waiting on repairs. They’re often out of stock, and those you find may not be the correct color.

Still, there’s something to be said about the convenience of buying a replacement if you don’t mind paying for it.

  1. Turn off your phone.
  2. Attach the crevice tool on your vacuum.

Fixing Your PlayStation 4’s Hardware Issues: The Ultimate Guide

Also, you want to check your controller reset. On your PS4 controller, press and hold the PS button. Wait for the system light to turn orange before releasing it.

Thereafter, press and hold the PS button again. Wait for the light to turn white. This should allow your console to boot properly.

The Blinking Red Light

As for the blinking red light, it can be a signal of overheating. Most likely, the problem is with a malfunctioning fan. A fan that doesn’t work equates to overheating.

This is one of the reasons why Sony decided to beef up its cooling system for the PlayStation 5. Hence, the first thing to do is to give your PS4 a rest. 

Hit and hold the power button of your console for about seven seconds or until you hear the system beeping and powering off the unit. Unplug the main power supply and let your PS4 rest for several hours.

Another remedy is to improve the ventilation around your console. Give it some breathing room by transferring it to a well-ventilated room. Also, do not place the unit over carpets and the like.

Fixing PlayStation 4 HDMI Problems

Sometimes, it is the HDMI cables and ports that are causing your PS4 to malfunction. Generally, damaged HDMI ports and cables lead to audio and video disruptions. 

Thus, check the condition of the HDMI ports on your console, as well as your TV. To test the ports, use another set of HDMI cables and see if they will work. If they don’t, then the ports are likely damaged.

Probing deeper into the ports, check if there is a piece of metal bent upward. Get a small tool like a pin and bend the metal down. Keep watch of any missing teeth on the port as these can damage your cables.

If the ports are in good condition, then it’s likely that your HDMI cable is the problem. Thus, replace the cable with a new one.

When Console Rejects the Gaming Disc

This Is What to Do If You Drop Your Phone in Water

The longer your phone sits in the water, the more time water has to creep and seep into your phone through any cracks or open ports. This means fast action is the key to solving your technology woes.

Grab Your Phone (Quickly)

Our first piece of advice on what to do when you drop your phone in water: retrieve it as quickly as possible.

While most phones are water-resistant, few are actually waterproof. Once you’ve dropped the phone in water, you’ll need to act quickly.

Modern smartphones have fewer cracks and crevices. There may still be enough openings to allow for some (potentially permanent) water damage.

If you are on a moving boat or vehicle, do not risk your safety to grab the phone. Only grab the device if you know you can get it.

Don’t shake it when you first get your phone out of the water—this can actually help water get closer to the inner parts of the phone, which are much more vulnerable to damage than the exterior.

What to Do If You Drop Your Phone in Water: Turn It Off

If your phone is plugged into a charger, unplug it immediately. If you dropped a phone in the ocean, stop whatever activities you’re doing and give the phone some attention.

Phones don’t typically die because of exposure to water. The big problem comes when the wiring inside the phone is exposed to water, causing it to short-circuit.

Fortunately, it’s less likely that your phone will have time to short out if you turn it off immediately.

Once you power the phone off, the chances of saving your phone are much greater. Not only that, but the wiring has time to dry before the water can conduct harmful electricity to it.

Remove Any Detachable Parts

If you’ve dropped your cell phone in water, you need to remove any parts that come off. You shouldn’t need any tools for this. In fact, if you use a tool without knowing what you’re doing, you could do more damage than good.

You can tell pretty quickly which parts are meant to come out. Your case should come off if it helps to hold in water.

If your phone has an SD card, that’s one other thing you can take out. You may still be able to use the card even if the phone loses functionality. This also allows that part of the phone to “breathe” and dry out faster.

You might be able to remove the battery, but in most cases, this isn’t possible. If you aren’t sure, you can call us and we’ll check the phone’s parts out for you.

Wash Your Phone Carefully

If your phone was submerged in saltwater, beer, or another damaging liquid, you may need to clean it off. Saltwater corrodes the parts that make your phone work, and other liquids can become sticky when they dry up.

Once you are sure you’ve removed every detachable part, gently run a small stream of clean water over the phone. You won’t need much. Avoid submerging the device in a bowl or sink—this could allow more water to seep in.

If you don’t have immediate access to clean water, consider bottled water. You mainly want to get rid of any other liquid.

Carefully Pat Dry With a Soft Towel

This part is pretty self-explanatory. Avoid applying too much pressure on any part of the device. Use a soft, absorbent towel to remove as much moisture as possible.

Don’t insert anything into the ports or any crevices. The towel’s fibers will get any moisture residing there, moisture any deeper will take time to dry out.

Another don’t: avoid pointing a hairdryer at your device. Some people have used this method along with the rice method with disappointing results.

Place Phone Somewhere Safe and Dry

The next step: letting your phone dry out. A phone in water will have drawn in moisture.

You might be tempted to try some more quick fixes here. The best thing you can do for your phone is to wait patiently while it dries out.

When letting your phone dry, do not try to power it on. It may take a day or two for the phone to completely dry, and you don’t want to power it on while there is still moisture present.

Keep your phone at room temperature, if possible. Laying it out to dry in the sun can lead to other problems, as phones don’t typically handle extreme heat well.

A cool, but not cold, flat surface is best. Keep it far away from any water sources, especially if you’re feeling superstitious. You may want to put it in a locked drawer or cabinet, away from curious hands.

Monitor for Performance Issues

If your phone dries out completely, you can now try turning your device on. Make note of what your phone does, including anything out of the norm.

Some phones power on and then display unusual quirks. You might notice display or touch problems with your screen. Others show progressively-worse performance over time.

Sadly, some phones never turn on. If your phone was submerged in water for a long time, this is the most likely scenario.

The Most Common Xbox One Issues and How to Fix Them

The Xbox One is one of the most amazing gaming consoles ever made. It offers a plethora of entertainment options such as gaming, streaming, and even renting movies online. However, like any other piece of technology, it also has its faults. There are common Xbox one issues gaming console will experience from time to time. Luckily, because they are so common, the solutions are relatively universal as well.

1. Frozen Splash Screen

Whenever you turn the Xbox on from being completely shut off, it might take a few minutes to get going. 

Anytime that you turn it on, the same screen will appear, the Xbox logo will be presented on a bright green page. This page will remain on the screen until the user interface is fully loaded and ready to be used. 

However, if you’re still staring at the same screen after 8 to 10 minutes, then it might be a sign that the screen is frozen. If so, there’s no need to panic, you’ll just need to do a hard reset. 

You can do so by holding down the Xbox button on the console for 10 seconds. After it shuts down, give it a few seconds, then hold down all three buttons (power button, sync button, and eject button for 10 more seconds until you hear two loud beeps. 

2. Console Is Grinding Your Disc

Sometimes, while you’re playing a game, you’ll notice a weird sound that’s coming from the console. It might have a weird cadence that sounds like a scraping noise. 

If you hear this noise, it’s more than likely the gaming console that’s grinding away at your disc. If you continue to play through it, the disc will become impossible for your console to read from that point on.

First things first, be sure to save your progress on the game. After you’ve done so, cancel the application on your Xbox and return to the user interface screen. Then hit the eject button to take the disc out of the system, then close the disc dock and turn the power off.

Once you’ve turned off the power, unplug all of the cables from the console and turn the console face-first onto the floor. Give the console three bumps with the palm of your hand (not too hard!).

The disc scratching is most likely from a loose part within the system. hitting the system should jostle it back into position or at least away from the disc bay. Return to play and, if problems persist, take it to a game console repair shop.

3. Poor Resolution

Is the display for your Xbox One noticeably worse? Is it grainy and not at all living up to the resolution standard that you’ve gotten used to? If so, then there’s a quick fix you can perform to get rid of this problem!

Rubbing alcohol can be pretty abrasive so don’t rub it on your camera lens directly. Dilute it first by mixing it up with water. Grab a microfiber cloth and dip it in your now diluted alcohol. 

Rub the cloth around your camera lens in gentle circles. The scratches should start to fade after a few times of doing this. 

Scratch Repair Kit 

If you don’t want to use a DIY method, there are camera lens scratch repair kits on the market that you can buy. 

Put a small amount of the cream onto the scratched-up lens and rub it with a soft, microfiber cloth for about four minutes or so. You may have to repeat this process more than once if the scratches are deep. 

Vaseline 

Put a small amount of Vaseline on your finger and apply it to the scratched-up areas of your camera. Grab a clean microfiber cloth and gently rub the Vaseline away. 

Make sure you don’t press too hard or the Vaseline may get stuck in the scratches rather than get rid of them. 

Pencil Eraser 

If all of your pencil erasers have been chewed up or used, head to the dollar store and pick up a fresh pack. This method needs a brand-new pencil eraser. 

Rub the eraser over the scratch in one direction. Don’t move it back and forth. After a bit, the scratch should begin to fade. 

Toothpaste 

The most common method for getting rid of scratches is toothpaste. Paste, not gel. Squeeze a bit of the toothpaste on the scratch and use a q-tip to gently work it in. 

It will take about five minutes. When the time is up, dampen a microfiber cloth and use it to get rid of the toothpaste residue. If the scratches are deep, you may have to do this process more than once.

Of course, the best way to get rid of scratches is by avoiding them in the first place. You’ve got to take care of your phone in order to keep in good, working order. 

Put a Case on the Phone

We depend on our laptops to work every time we need to use it. When it doesn’t turn on, it can feel as if we are having a heart attack. Our minds work on overdrive as we sort what could be wrong.

Power issues aren’t uncommon for laptop owners, but that doesn’t make it any less frightening. You always wonder if you can fix it each it happens.

How to Fix a Laptop That Won’t Turn on

There are a few of the same phases every laptop goes through if it won’t power. No matter what brand or type of laptop you have you can try any of these tips to see if they help you.

If your laptop won’t start, start with the first method and work your way down or try one you believe will help.

Look at Your Power Supply 

You might think this is an obvious method to mention, but sometimes that’s the only problem. We all have those moments where we fail to do something we always do.

A cord could be loose which causes the laptop to force shut down for what you believe to be an unknown reason. If the LED light for the power cord is on, check to see if the power button works too.

Checking your cord can also tell you if the problem is with the power supply itself. Wires that are tangled and bent create weak points that damage the power supply over time. If there is something wrong with the cord, you can verify this by testing your laptop with another cord with the same voltage. 

Remove the Battery and Anything Inside Your PC 

If the battery overheats, it’s enough of a reason for your laptop to not want to power. Feel your battery to check if it’s hot to the touch. Allowing the hot battery time to cool off can work when it overheats. 

Other times, just taking out the battery and popping it back it does the trick. The PC may not turn on due to USB drives or memory cards stuck in the port. You might be able to verify this if your computer leaves an “Operating system not found” error message. 

If a memory card or USB is left in the system, the BIOS attempts to boot from either instead of the hard drive. The same happens with CDs left are inside the computer so take them out.

Use a Rescue Disk

Another alternative is to boot with a reuse disk or USB drive if you own one. You could also download a recovery disk from another PC then burn it on CD or USB. Once you insert one of the two, try to boot your PC again. 

The same can be done with a MAC. Just remember when you’re using a recovery disk to put your PC into recovery mode. 

Check for Possible Hard Drive Corruption

There’s a chance the problem with your computer lies in the hard drive. Even if your hard drive is corrupted, the data is often still intact. However, you would need to resolve an altered update or file that is making your PC go haywire.

On Windows, you should boot your PC in safe mode and go to “Advanced Options” and click on “Startup Settings.” Your computer should scan, find, and ideally, repair what’s wrong. It could be a number of things like a virus. 

On a MAC, you will follow something similar by opening the folder to repair disk permissions. If there’s really a corruption issue, you would need to click on “verify disk.” 

Switch Hard Drive to Another PC  

If nothing works, there is a final option you can do to at least access your precious data. This requires the most PC knowledge as you’re going to have to deconstruct your PC to remove the hard drive. 

If you can do this, you can save any important data before sending it to a computer shop for repair. So long as there isn’t a problem with the motherboard, you can fix your PC by resolving the startup complication.

We all love our cold drinks, well almost. For sure, your laptop doesn’t. 

What’s worse is the panic that sets in after the spill happens, imagining that the water-damaged laptop is a goner. 

As they say, every minute counts, and the clock is ticking. Here, with a little luck, you’ll discover a few ways to get your laptop running again in no time. 

What’s the Risk?

No matter what you’ve spilled – coffee, soda, or water, any liquid can destroy your laptop’s keyboard. Still, as you sit thinking what you should do, the menacing liquid is seeping through to the motherboard, memory, and circuits. You may even be able to hear an ominous crackling as this happens. 

Of course, you may have a model specifically built to resist this kind of damage, but most models are not. Now is the time to take action before it’s too late. 

First Steps to Save A Water-Damaged Laptop

Here you have two goals. The first is to stop the liquid, the particles, and sediments from bridging an electrical connection. Besides, we want to prevent any corrosion to the circuits and metallic parts inside the laptop. 

Power Off or Power Down 

First, unplug the laptop before anything else and hold down the power button for five to ten seconds or until it turns off. If the battery is removable, take it out to avoid the liquid reaching it and causing it to short out.

Dry and Drain

Blot any visible liquid from the surface of the keyboard with a cloth or paper towel. 

Open the laptop as far as it goes and tilt it onto its side to allow the liquid to drain out. The next step is to put it upside down on a table or counter to allow the liquid to seep out. Let the laptop drain overnight, but some experts suggest 48-72 hours is better.  

If you have a blow dryer or can borrow one, put it on the coldest setting or use a can of compressed air to dry out all hard to reach places. Carefully dry the laptop while it is still upside down so that the liquid continues to drain.

Remove Everything

Remove all removable components, this includes the battery, mouse, cd drive, and any flash drives. Don’t leave anything attached at all—strip it bare. 

If you are at ease with opening up your computer, take off the cover. Usually, you’ll require a Phillips or Torx screwdriver to do this. To remove the memory, you press the side clips to release each stick. 

There will be more screws to free it from the frame to remove the solid-state drive or hard drive. Carefully detach it from all electrical and data connection ports or cables.

Examine each item that you remove and look for any indication of wetness or damage. If the component is damp, wipe it off. If there is any debris or liquid other than water, you will want to use a cotton swab with 99% Isopropyl alcohol which will dissolve it without causing any damage. It will evaporate, and there won’t be any residue left behind. 

Wipe Everything

Wipe all the components you removed from the laptop dry. Once the laptop has dried, reattach everything, and power it on. If it starts with no problems, then try a couple of programs and test any external drives or devices to be sure that it is all working correctly. 

What If It Doesn’t Start?

While we hope for the best when these types of accidents occur, there is always a risk that we won’t get the result we hope we will. If, after the laptop has had sufficient time to dry, it doesn’t power or has other problems; then, it’s time to head to a professional.
