Some studies show that as many as two-thirds of North American gamers prefer Xbox over PlayStation and Nintendo. Regardless of who you pick in the console wars, many people purchase an Xbox One for some of its exclusives.
If you own the system, you may have found yourself dealing with some Xbox One power issues. In such a situation, looking into an Xbox One power supply replacement becomes necessary.
But how can you safely and effectively replace your Xbox’s power supply? Read on for a brief guide on how to correctly identify, remove, and replace your console’s power supply.
A Quick Word
Before we go further, you should know this is not a simple task. Many at-home fixes, such as cleaning a disc drive, are relatively quick and easy.
Your Xbox’s power supply is located inside your system. That means you should be comfortable with Xbox One disassembly.
There are also some safety risks when dealing with a console. You must follow any safety measures. These include using the proper tools, ensuring the system is completely powered down before working, and safely discarding any used electronics.
If you aren’t confident in solving your Xbox One power issues, we strongly recommend looking into Xbox repair services. At Fruit Fixed, we’re happy to help you with this task so you don’t damage the system or yourself.
Steps to Removing Your Power Supply
If you’re ready to begin replacing your power supply, follow these steps. We’ll guide you through the disassembly and replacement. Please ensure your system is powered off and unplugged before beginning.
Remove the Sticker
Your first step is to remove the white sticker on the side of your console. The sticker should have the barcode and serial number of the system. We suggest storing this sticker somewhere for identification in case you need it later.
You’re removing this sticker to get to the screw beneath it. You can use blunt tweezers to easily remove the sticker.
Remove the External Screws
With the screws all uncovered, remove the external screws from the back of the Xbox One. These are two 12.6mm screws on the left and right of the console.
As before, ensure you safely store these screws. We recommend using a small bowl to keep them in.
Remove the Upper Case
Once those screws are removed, it’s time to remove the upper case. Pull the front of the case toward the front of the console until it stops sliding. Do not use excess force, or you may damage the console.
With the case out of its clips, rotate the console so that the back is facing you. Lift the left side of the case and pause when you aren’t able to easily lift it any further. Keep this side held and push up on the right side to unhinge it.
Swing the case open to about 70 degrees. Afterward, push it down with a gentle force to remove it from the console. Keep the case in a safe place while you continue.
Carefully Disconnect the Ribbon Cable
Ribbon cables are exceptionally fragile and can be difficult to work with. For some, this may be the most difficult part of the process.
Locate the ribbon cable on the front circuit board. Use a small tool, such as a spudger or even your fingernail, to open the hinged flap on the cable connector.
Once done, gently pull the cable free from the connector. We recommend using blunt tweezers for a sturdy grip.
Remove the Front Circuit Board and Upper Screws
Retrieve your screwdriver again to remove the three screws on the front of the circuit board. One is near the ribbon cable you just removed, while the others are to the left and center.
These are 13.3mm screws, so choose the right screwdriver for the job. As before, store these in a small bowl or alternative safe place.
With the screws removed, pull the front circuit board away from the metal case. You can pull it straight out, but make sure you aren’t pinching the ribbon cord from before. We recommend pulling it evenly from both sides to avoid bending or damaging it.
Remove the Metal Case
Now that the circuit board is out, there are eight screws to remove on the metal case. Six are 47.7mm screws, while the others are 7.5mm screws. Use the correct size screwdriver and store these screws safely.
Afterward, detach the press connector near the corner. A simple spudger can lift the connector up and away. Don’t fully remove this connector, as prying open the socket can damage it.
Finally, remove the lower plastic case. You’ll only need to lift it up and away. Beneath, unscrew the lower metal case screws.
Detach the Power Supply
With this disassembly complete, unscrew the power supply and fan. Keep the disc drive steady as you do so, and remove the five screws of varying lengths from the bottom.
Beneath is the power supply and fan. You’ll need to loosen the disc drive, unstick the foam tape near your power supply, and then lift the supply directly upward.
Move the supply carefully so that you can see the cables beneath. Place it aside and remove the fan, which is blocking the plug-ins for those cables.
Remove the Socket
With the fan safely connected and removed, you can remove the power supply’s socket. Install your Xbox OEM power supply and continue to reassemble your system.
To do so, you’ll need to follow the steps you took in reverse order. Keeping your parts organized and documented is crucial to easily following this step.
