Working from home means you get to ditch your desk and relax on the couch instead. But then it happens. You try to shift positions, and your MacBook slides out of your lap and hits the floor with a heart-dropping thud. The screen is shattered. How are you supposed to get through the rest of your workday now? Don’t panic. Fixing a broken MacBook isn’t as difficult or expensive as you might think.

We’ve put together this guide to show you what steps you should take next, so let’s get started!

1. Stop Using Your Broken MacBook

As soon as you notice a problem with your MacBook, you should stop using it (if possible). Trying to keep your device running will put extra strain on the hardware, which can make the damage worse—and more expensive to fix later.

Turn off your MacBook and switch to a different device if you can. Don’t turn it back on unless you’re troubleshooting it or getting ready to repair it.

2. Do Some Basic Troubleshooting

If the problem with your MacBook is small and simple, you may be able to fix it on your own without taking it to a professional repair company. Spend some time troubleshooting your device to figure out (to the best of your ability) what is wrong with it. Once you know the answer, you can decide what steps to take next.

For example, you might be able to fix MacBook battery issues by purchasing a new power cord. This will be a much faster and cheaper fix than handing it over to a shop.

Can’t figure out what’s causing the damage? The repair might be more extensive than you can DIY at home. In this case, unless you have a lot of experience assembling MacBooks, you should leave the job for the pros

3. Don’t Put Off the Repairs

If you’re like most people, you use your MacBook for several hours every day. You might not be able to get through a workday without it, but that doesn’t mean you should keep nursing your broken MacBook through new projects.

Remember, continuing to use a damaged device will just make the issue worse.

It’s better to repair your MacBook right away, even if you have to spend a bit more money than wanted. (This doesn’t mean you should shell out a lot of money on repairs, though. We’ll get to that below).

The sooner your MacBook is fixed, you can get back to being productive at your work or hobbies. You’ll also be able to keep more money in your bank account in the long run.

4. MacBook Repair: How to Find a Restoration Company

You might want to fix your MacBook as soon as possible, but that doesn’t mean you should hand your device over to the first repair company you find. They might not be a reputable company, and you might have to pay someone else to re-do your MacBook repair later.

Pick a Local Business

You should always find a local company to handle your MacBook repair. Not only will this benefit your community, but it will also make the repair process much cheaper and faster.

If you choose a company in a different city or state, you will either have to spend a lot of your free time driving to the location, or you’ll have to spend extra money shipping your phone to them in the mail. This makes the fix more difficult than it needs to be, so you should stick with someone local instead.

Make Sure They Have the Right Experience

How many years has the company been in the business? If they only have a year or two of experience, you might not want to trust them with your MacBook. While this doesn’t mean they aren’t skilled or don’t have high-quality products, but the last thing you want is to be a guinea pig for a startup business.

You should also make sure the company you hire has repaired your type of device before. If your MacBook needs a few fixes, don’t take it to a company that specializes in Android phones or PCs.

Find Out if They’re Trustworthy

Spend some time reading online reviews to find out if the repair company is trustworthy. Visit third-party sites, such as Yelp, to get an insider’s look at how the company operates and how they handle its customers.

It’s a good idea to find their business on the Better Business Bureau as well. This will give you peace of mind that they’re a real, reputable company and won’t take advantage of you and your wallet.

Ask How Long the Job Will Take

Before you drop off your MacBook, make sure you ask how long the job will take. You have deadlines to meet, online classes to attend, and money to make (especially since many businesses have switched to remote work). The repair company would be able to give you a clear timeline so you can schedule the most convenient time for you.

Get a Quote

There’s no need to spend hundreds of dollars on a hardware repair (unless your MacBook has a major problem). Because of this, you should stay away from companies that charge high rates.

At the same time, don’t choose the cheapest option either. You get what you pay for, so it’s worth investing a bit of extra money to ensure the repair is of good quality.
