Is your iPad power button not working? Without it, the iPad quickly loses a ton of its functions. This would be a big blow given how expensive the latest iPads are.
You won’t be able to put your device to sleep. You can’t wake it up. You might not be able to enjoy the best mobile apps without the power button.
Fortunately, there are options to fix this problem. To learn how to fix a power button not working, check out our five tips below and get your iPad back in tip-top shape:
Take Off the Protective Case
Is the iPad power button not working due to a minor blockage? Check by removing your iPad’s protective case. There are instances where the cover might prevent you from pushing the power button.
Once removed, long-press the power button. If the cover is the cause of the problem, your iPad power button should work now.
This does mean you’ll have to replace your iPad cover because it doesn’t fit your device properly. If you don’t, you risk damaging your iPad instead of protecting it. You could jam the power button and get it stuck there permanently.
Using the wrong-size protective case could also lead to damaging the device itself. If it’s too tight, you risk warping the device and bending it a bit. If it’s too loose, the iPad might fall and shatter.
If this happens, you’ll have to replace the power button by calling in a professional. That’s where we can help. But before we dive into our services, try out the next step you can try: performing a hard reset.
Try a Hard Reset
If the iPad power button does not work after a few tries, don’t fret. You might simply need to perform a hard reset. Doing this will require activating Assistive Touch — more on than below.
You might have to perform a factory reset too. Doing this will delete all your photos and other media. Make sure you upload what you can to the Cloud before proceeding forward.
How do you perform a hard reset? Simply press down on the power button and the Home button simultaneously. Hold down on these until the device reboots.
For a factory reset, you’ll have to go to the Settings and go down to the General options. Choose Backup Then Erase to perform a reset.
Activate Assistive Touch
Are your iPad home and power button not working? When both are down, how can you shut down or reset your device? The solution is to activate assistive touch.
This feature appeared prominently in earlier models of the iPad and iPhone. This refers to the virtual power button you can tap and drag on the screen. It gives you the ability to manage your iPad, from taking screenshots to resetting the device, by tapping on different menu options.
Simply go to the Settings app and head to General. From there, pick Accessibility and toggle on the Assistive Touch. You’ll see a white button appear on the screen.
Now that you have it on, the next step is to reset your device. Turning your iPad on and off could fix the issue.
Once it turns on again, go to the physical power button and give it a try. If you only had to deal with a minor software lag, the power button should become responsive again.
DFU Mode
When you have a power button not working on iPad devices, don’t immediately assume it’s a hardware issue. It could be a software issue too. You can address a software lag by activating the iPad’s Assistive Touch and resetting it from there.
However, if you suffer from a more serious software issue, like a firmware problem or an update bug, you’ll have to take one more step. Your next course of action is to active DFU mode, which stands for Device Firmware Upgrade. This mode will scan your iPad and attempt to fix any firmware and update issues.
The only problem is that you will need a power button to run DFU mode. You can work around this problem with unofficial applications such as Reiboot and Redsnow. These apps will simulate what your power button would do.
Again, performing this method will erase everything on your iPad. Save what you need on the Cloud before activating DFU mode. This ensures you can still access your photos, songs, and more once you get things working again.
