On April 1st, 1976, a whole new era began. College dropouts Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak came up with a vision of what the future could become if they brought to life the designs they had created. Since then, Apple was born, and to this day, each year, more and more of Apple’s devices continue to evolve into a better version of what they were.
Now, about a billion people worldwide are iPhone users, but not everyone uses their iPhones to their fullest potential. Today, we’re going to teach you five things you didn’t know your iPhone could do!
1. Hidden Backspace in Calculator
How frustrating is it to be using the calculator and you make one small mistake and you have to start calculating all over again? For regular calculator users, this is a massive annoyance. Luckily, the calculator application has a hidden feature that will save you loads of time.
When you’re in the middle of your calculating, and you mess up on one number, the only thing you have to do is swipe left or right where the digits are located. And just with one swipe, you correct the mistake you made and don’t have to press the C or AC to start all over.
2. Trackpad on Keyboard
The iPhone keyboard can also turn into a trackpad. This means that you can move the cursor a lot more quickly and type with more ease without having to click on the keyboard or screen.
To move the cursor, hold down the spacebar, and you’ll see you’ll be able to place the cursor wherever you desire in the text. With newer iPhone models, by holding down any key, the entire keyboard will go blank. You can also swipe between keys to type out a message instead of having to text the old fashion way.
3. Teach Siri How to Pronounce Names Correctly
If your hands are full or you’re phone is too far away, calling out to Siri to help you is a solution. Yet, when you command Siri to call someone from your contact list, it’s not uncommon for her to not understand you or calls someone else because her way of pronouncing specific names is way off from how they should be pronounced.
However, you can teach Siri how to correctly pronounce certain names or even teach her how to call them by their nicknames (if they have one.) Firstly, ask Siri to pronounce a name. Next, tell Siri that’s it’s not pronouncing correctly, and it will then instruct you to pronounce well.
Siri will then give you a few options as to which way it should pronounce it. After making your choice, Siri will save that new pronunciation. Now, you shouldn’t have issues with Siri understanding you ever again.
You can also teach Siri how to recognize specific contacts with nicknames. Click on a contact and type in a nickname in the designated area. Next, you can tell Siri to assign that particular nickname to the contact, and next time, you can say, “Siri, call my mom” or “Siri, call my boss,” and it’ll understand you as well.
4. Your Phone Can Flash When Receiving Messages
Some people always have their phone on silent because the sound of notifications and calls coming in can be a stress trigger. Others might not like having their phone on vibrate. Well, if you prefer a more visible way of receiving notifications, you’re in luck!
The flash on your iPhone can be used as a notification alert. Click on Settings and then click on Accessibility. Afterward, enter into the Audio/Visual section and find the LED Flash For Alerts option.
Once you activate it, your iPhone will alert you of an incoming message by flashing the LED light a few times. This is also useful for those who might have hearing issues and would prefer a visual alert.
5. Medical ID Can Help You Find Your Phone
If Find My iPhone doesn’t seem to be working for whatever reason, the medical ID card on your iPhone can be useful if your iPhone goes missing. Filling out your medical ID card with information such as emergency contacts and such can help a friendly stranger contact you if they found your phone.
First, go to Settings, next to Medical ID, and then choose the option to Edit. Fill it out and once you’re finished, toggle the “Show When Locked” to “on.” That way, if the friendly bystander finds your missing iPhone, they can look at your medical ID by clicking on the Emergency link on the lock screen.
Hidden Features Aren’t Working
After discovering these neat tricks your iPhone was hiding, the first thing you’re most likely going to do is try them! But, if you’re repeatedly trying and for some odd reason they’re not working, there could be a few reasons as to why that is.
Out Of Date
Usually, these tricks should work without a problem. However, if there is any kind of problem arising, make sure you’ve updated your phone. People sometimes hold back from doing so, thinking that it’ll slow down their phone or make things worse. But, if you don’t have the latest IOS version, it could cause minor errors.
Old Device
These tricks work if you have an iPhone 6s or older. Even then, because Apple has advanced greatly and the updates are meant to suit the newer models, the older phone you have may not be letting you enjoy these tricks.
