Are you tired of button-mashing your iPhone’s home button as if your life depended on it? Is your iPhone home button stuck? Do you wish there was a way to fix this issue so you didn’t go to bed at night with your dominant thumb throbbing?

If so, then you need to figure out how to repair this issue once and for all. Doing so can give you more peace of mind as you go through your day.

See below for several tips and tricks on how to cure your phone from the dreaded frozen home button.

1. Restart Your Phone

“Did you try restarting it?”. We know, we know, there isn’t a more frustrating thing to hear from a repair service than that question right there. However, it certainly helps cure some of the most common setbacks, if only for a day or two.

When you press the home button, you might experience one of two problems:

  • The home button gets stuck
  • The home button no longer responds to your pressing it

Either one is less than ideal. Start by holding down the lock button on your iPhone and wait for the “slide to power off” button to pop up. Once it shows up, do exactly as it says to do. Wait 10 seconds, then turn the power back on.

If the problem persists, you can try another trick. Open up your Photos app, then hold down on the lock button again. Wait for the “slide to power off” button to appear again only this time, press down on the home button for a count of 10 seconds.

After 10 seconds of holding down the home button, the “slide to power off” option should disappear and your Photos app should close out. Double-check to see if the home button is working now (which it should be). If not, you’ll need to hire an iPhone expert repair service to take a closer look.

2. Clean Your Home Button

For some of you, you might have an iPhone version that’s so old, it has a home “button” on it. As in, a physical button that you push down on. In that case, your home button might be legitimately stuck in place.

If so, then this issue might be fixable with a thorough clean. The most logical culprit is a spec or two of dust/dirt that’s become lodged in the tiny crevice of your home button. You can try spraying it with an air duster at an angle (not straight down!) to see if the specs will be removed.

For those of you with a touch-only home button invests in some alcohol wipes. Gently dab at the home button and its surrounding area to clean up space. Allow it to air dry before attempting to use it again.

There could’ve been a sticky substance that got on your home button. If that’s the case, it makes it difficult for the home button to sense your finger when you press on it. Again, if this doesn’t do the trick, you might need to take it to a repair expert.

3. Use an Alternate Home Button

Did you know that iPhones already have an alternate home button option build into their macOS software? It’s what Apple refers to as their AssistiveTouch feature. This handy service allows you to replace pressing buttons when they cease to work.

To turn on AssistiveTouch, follow these steps below:

  • Make sure to download the latest macOS version from “Settings” if you haven’t already.
  • Enter “Settings”, then go to “Accessibility”, then press on “Touch”
  • In the “Touch” menu, you’ll see the AssistiveTouch feature, make sure to turn it on.

Apple also notes that you can quickly turn on AssistiveTouch by simply declaring “Hey Siri”, then telling her to “turn on AssistiveTouch”.

If all else fails, you can go to “Settings”, go to “Accessibility”, then “Accessibility Shortcut” to turn on the AssistiveTouch feature. Whatever floats your boat.

Start by plugging in the charger cable to the charging dock in your iPhone. Once it’s plugged in, give the charger a gentle push towards the front of your phone and try to click the home button a few times.

This “quick fix” is a last resort attempt. If you’ve tried the other fixes above with no prevail, then it’s time to call the experts for help.
