Can You Replace an iPad Screen at Home?

Did you (or someone else, like your child) drop your iPad? Or maybe you forgot it was in your bag, which you haphazardly threw on the floor. Either way, you heard a sickening crunch and, to your absolute horror, found yourself with a broken iPad screen.

That horrified reaction is understandable, considering the iPad product line’s premium pricing. If you replace your damaged iPad with one of the latest, lowest-cost models, you’d still pay an MSRP of $449.

At this point, you’re likely thinking of going the DIY way.

So, can you replace an iPad screen at home by yourself? Of course, you can, but that doesn’t always mean it’s a good idea.

We’ll tell you when it’s okay to perform DIY iPad screen repair or replacement vs. when to go to the pros for help, so read on.

When Can You Replace an iPad Screen the DIY Way?

Ideally, you should only replace a cracked iPad screen if you have experience and knowledge of gadget repair. Because if you don’t, and you tinker around with it, you may cause more irreparable damage.

Let’s say you’ve fixed electronic devices before and are confident in your DIY skills. The next question is, can you buy an iPad replacement screen?

You may have heard Apple launched its Self-Service Repair program in 2022. It gives anyone experienced in electronic device repairs access to genuine parts and repair tools. Unfortunately, iPad replacement screens aren’t available yet at this time.

You may be able to find replacement screens for your iPad model online. Some are stand-alone (screen-only), while others are in kits.

Replacement kits come with the screen and the tools you need to disassemble your device. These include opening tools and picks, suction devices, suction pads, tweezers, and precision bits. They also have how-to guides with instructions, usually in written and video formats.

Read and watch those guides to determine how complex the replacement process is. You can then gauge if you have the skills and know-how to perform it yourself.

When and Why It’s Best to Go Pro Instead

If you don’t have any experience fixing electronic gadgets, it’s best to take your iPad to a professional tablet repair service.

This is the safest way to get your device repaired without the risk of doing more damage. It’s also faster and more convenient. And while it may cost you more upfront, it can be cheaper than a DIY job gone wrong.

iPad Hardware Repairs Are Complex

With its many sensitive and soldered components, opening an iPad is complex and not for the faint of heart. A tiny mistake, such as tugging on the cracked screen too harshly, can knock loose or damage other parts.

When that happens, you’ll have more than a busted display to worry about.

For example, a damaged internal component may cause your iPad to stop charging. That can give you or worsen your nomophobia, the fear of having no mobile phone connectivity

Speed and Convenience

If you were to DIY an iPad replacement job, you must spend ample time studying its repair manual. You may also have to wait a few days for your replacement screen delivery.

So, give or take, it might take at least two to three days before you can start the replacement job. But if things go awry, expect it to take longer.

Conversely, experienced gadget repair technicians usually finish most jobs in under an hour. However, this still depends on which service provider you choose.

The Apple Way

If you ship your device to Apple, it may take a couple of days or more for them to receive it. Then, they’d need a few more days to replace the screen and return your fixed device.

If you bring your iPad to an Apple service center that doesn’t have your screen in stock, it’ll also take a few days. After all, they’d have to order and wait for the part.

A Reputable Independent Service Provider

If you need a new screen now, your best bet is to partner with an independent repair service. The most reliable ones always have iPad replacement parts available. This lets them deliver quick services, usually finishing jobs in only 20 to 30 minutes.

Dependable gadget repair facilities also charge less than Apple and its service centers. You may even be able to snag a low-price replacement or repair guarantee!

Discover (And Address) Other Issues in One Visit

Suppose that dropping your iPad cracked its screen and also damaged its battery.

Your device may be charging now but might die soon if you don’t fix the battery problem. This can leave you with a non-powering iPad. A damaged battery may also be a safety hazard, as it can overheat and cause injury.

Another example is if you dropped your iPad on a wet surface. In this case, water may have penetrated your device and may be wreaking havoc on its internal parts.

If not addressed ASAP, water damage can cause your device to corrode from within. This can result in your iPad performing erratically or no longer turning on. Returning power to water-damaged electronics can also lead to electrical fires and shocks.

The good news is that when you have a pro replace your screen, they can discover other issues with your device.

Reputable technicians won’t repair those without telling you first and getting your consent. Likewise, they won’t force you to agree to the additional repairs on the spot. However, consider doing so for your safety and your iPad’s longevity.

Signs You Need to Replace Your Mac Charger Cable

Apple has a reputation for making luxurious, high-priced products. Still, people buy them en masse. Take for example how MacOS rose in just 10 years from an ownership of 12.86% to 31.34% in the US desktop market.

It’s hard not to love a Mac: it’s slim, has unparalleled battery life, and remains blazing fast for years. The cherry on top is that fancy snap-on charging cable. The problem is that Apple does not have a reputation for making good cables, and yours might not be looking so hot.

How do you tell when your Mac charger cable is in need of replacement? Let’s take a look at some signs that it’s time to buy a new one.

Signs Your Mac Charger Cable Is Broken

To be clear, we are talking about any issues with your Mac charger cable, Mac power adapter, and the charging port itself. It’s important to diagnose which of the three (or all three) the problem originates from.

Your Mac Is Not Charging

The first and most obvious sign that there is an issue is that your Mac is not charging. Before further diagnosis, make sure to isolate the issue just in case it’s not the cable or a loose Mac charging port

Make sure the outlet you’re using has power and has not blown out or been tripped. Check another outlet, just in case. Make sure the prongs are intact, straight, and free of debris.

Next, make sure the charging adapter has all its pins and is not obstructed by dust or debris. Check the insert on your MacBook as well. If there’s any grime, use a dry cloth and/or isopropyl alcohol to clear it out.

Your Mac Dies When Plugged In

Perhaps your Mac shows that it is charging, but it still dies while plugged in. This could be a sign that some of the wires are frayed or loose, resulting in limited power draw. The power outlet should be able to power and charge your MacBook at the same time, so clearly the charger is at fault.

Check the integrity of the charger and cable. Take note of the plastic or woven sheath peeling away. Look for exposed wires, or cracks and breaks in the seams between the adapter and cable – we’ll discuss later why these things present an issue.

Your Cable Is in Bad Condition

Any longtime Apple owner knows that the factory cables that come with your devices are very low quality. Apple only includes a thin, cheap plastic sheath that does not allow for much bending, twisting, or pulling. It’s highly recommended that you purchase a higher-quality, thicker woven cable from a third party.

Even if your Mac is charging just fine, a cable in poor condition is a disaster waiting to happen. It could stop working at any time, especially if you are away from home and have no other device.

Further, a frayed or exposed cable presents a risk to your safety and a fire hazard. You or someone you know could touch the cable and suffer an electric shock. Children who don’t know better may be at risk.

It’s better to bite the bullet now. Buy a new charging cable, pay to fix a loose charging port, or do whatever needs to be done. Otherwise, you’re just waiting for misfortune to befall you.

You Have Issues With the Plug Converter

Modern MacBook charging bricks are much smaller and more modular. If you have an M1-M3 then you probably have a palm-sized brick with a detachable USB-C charging cable. It may also include an extra charging port for another USB-C device.

Older MacBooks, particularly those before the M1 chips, featured a very different charging brick. The most noticeable distinction is that you can attach one of two plug adapters. One allows the brick to plug directly into the wall, while another adds an extra length of cable before the plug.

Issues may arise with this adapter, especially if you switch it out often. It may no longer sit flush, or may not click fully into place. You may also notice burn marks inside when popping off the adapter.

If there is an issue with the above – particularly on the brick side – it may be time for a replacement. If it’s just the attachment itself, then that’s a cheaper, easier replacement.

Your Folding Prongs Are Broken

M1-M3 Macs, as we mentioned, have a modern, smaller, modular adapter brick. It’s lighter, more durable, and less prone to breaking since there is no attaching plug adapter or plastic cable. However, it does have its own potential issues with the folding prongs.

The newer Macs’ folding prongs are nice since they allow you to stow the charger in a much smaller format. However, those prongs can bend or break. They’re less firm and durable when plugging into a wall compared to a grounded cable.

If you are having trouble plugging in or the prongs are loose, it may be time for a replacement.

What If Your Mac Won’t Charge or Turn On?

Now, you’ve diagnosed all of the potential issues with your Mac charger cable and Mac charging port. Our comprehensive guide will cover the vast majority of situations, if not all of them. What do you do if your Mac still doesn’t charge, or doesn’t even turn on?

Unfortunately, at this point it’s time to take it into the shop. The issue could very well extend beyond the cable and have to do with internal motherboard components. Check out our other guides to do a self-diagnosis, or just bring it in so we can take a look.

How to Fix a Phone That Has Water Damage

Ah, the dreaded plunge. Your trusty phone, a lifeline to the world, takes a dive into the deep, watery abyss-a sink, a toilet, or even a rain puddle. It’s a common tragedy, striking phones everywhere, regardless of their make or model.

In that moment, you’re faced with the grim possibility of losing not just a device, but a part of your daily life. But here’s a glimmer of hope: not all water encounters spell doom for your digital companion. So, what do you do when your phone takes an unexpected swim?

This article dives into the rescue mission-how to fix a phone that has water damage. Whether it’s an iPhone that’s seen better days or a beloved Android gasping for air, we’ve got your back. Keep reading, as we guide you step-by-step through the process of bringing your water-damaged phone back to life.

Reviving Your Water-Damaged Phone

When your phone gets a surprise bath, every second counts. The key to how to fix a phone that has water damage lies in your immediate response. First and foremost, power off your phone. This simple act can be a lifesaver, preventing short circuits that could fry your device’s internals.

After switching it off, remove any protective case or cover. Disconnect any plugged-in accessories like headphones or charging cables. If your phone’s design permits, remove the battery, SIM card, and memory card. This step is crucial in preventing further damage to these vital components.

Avoid the common mistake of shaking your phone or using a hairdryer. These methods can push water deeper into the phone, worsening the situation. Instead, gently blot your phone with a soft, lint-free cloth to absorb excess moisture. The goal here is to remove water without applying too much force.

Assessing the Damage

After the initial rescue efforts, it’s time to assess the damage. Water damage isn’t always immediately obvious, but certain signs can help you gauge the extent of the problem. A common red flag is screen malfunctioning-flickering, black spots, or a complete lack of response. This can indicate that water has seeped into your screen or other critical components.

Another crucial aspect to check is the phone motherboard. This is the nerve center of your phone, and water contact here can be catastrophic. Look for any visible signs of moisture or corrosion. Many phones have water damage indicators-small stickers that change color when wet.

These can usually be found in or near the battery compartment. Their color change is a tell-tale sign that water has invaded the interior of your phone, possibly reaching the motherboard.

Remember, even if your phone seems to be working fine, water damage can be insidious, leading to long-term issues if not addressed.

The iPhone Dilemma

Dealing with an iPhone damaged by water presents its own set of challenges. Unlike many Android phones, iPhones generally don’t have removable batteries or back covers. This design quirk means that water trapped inside has fewer escape routes, potentially increasing the risk of damage to internal components.

For iPhones, the immediate step after water exposure-turning it off and drying the exterior-remains the same. However, since you can’t remove the battery, there’s an increased urgency to keep the phone powered off and get it to a professional for a thorough checkup as soon as possible. The compact and intricate design of iPhones makes DIY repairs riskier and more complex compared to other smartphones.

Apple’s water damage indicators, located inside the SIM card slot, can quickly show if moisture has made its way inside. If these indicators have changed color, it’s a clear sign that the phone needs professional attention.

Removing Components

In the aftermath of a water mishap, removing the SIM card and other detachable parts from your phone is a crucial step. If your phone design allows it, swiftly take out the SIM card, memory card, and battery. This action is more than just a precaution; it’s a critical move in your damage control strategy.

Removing these components serves two key purposes. Firstly, it reduces the risk of your valuable data, like contacts and photos, being lost if the phone succumbs to water damage. Secondly, and more importantly, it aids in airing out the device.

By opening up these compartments, you’re allowing air to circulate more freely inside the phone, which helps in drying out any moisture trapped in hard-to-reach places.

This procedure is especially significant for phones with removable batteries. By taking out the battery, you’re cutting off any power that might cause a short circuit, thereby reducing the risk of irreparable damage to the phone’s motherboard and other critical components.

Drying and Cleaning Techniques

Once you’ve removed all removable parts, it’s time to dry out your water-damaged phone. The most effective method is to place your phone in a dry, well-ventilated area. A common myth is to use rice; however, this is not recommended as rice grains can get into small openings and cause more harm. Instead, consider using silica gel packets, if available, as they are more effective in absorbing moisture.

Another safe technique is to leave your phone upright in a room with a gentle airflow. You can also use a fan to circulate air around the phone, but avoid using hot air dryers as the heat can damage the phone’s components. While drying, rotate the phone every few hours to ensure moisture escapes from all openings.

Patience is key here. It’s recommended to leave your phone to dry for at least 24 to 48 hours before attempting to turn it on again. Remember, rushing this process can lead to permanent damage.

PlayStation 5 HDMI Not Working? Here’s What You Can Do

Since its early development way back in 2002, the HDMI cable has become immensely popular, simplifying audiovisual connections worldwide. Even better, these humble cables have kept up with the times, with the launch of HDMI 2.1 supporting 8k and higher resolution with room to spare. It’s no wonder why the PS5 ships with this industry standard!

However, when your PlayStation 5 HDMI is not working, all the glitz of modern tech just turns into frustration. How do you troubleshoot your connection and get back to your gameplay?

Let’s take a look at why HDMI errors happen, the basics of troubleshooting, and a few more in-depth console checks worth trying.

Is Your HDMI the Problem?

First things first: is the HDMI port the culprit behind your current problems? Here are a few things you might notice if something goes wrong with your HDMI connection:

  • A black TV screen
  • A “No Input,” “No Display Detected,” or “No Signal” message
  • A blurry or pixelated video
  • Audio distortion

In rare cases, HDMI connection issues can also result in a frozen screen.

In addition, if something is wrong with the PS5 HDMI port, the LED on your console might turn blue for a while before starting up, and it may also shut down right away. This blue light is an indicator of internal issues.

What Causes PlayStation 5 HDMI Port Issues?

If your HDMI port is to blame, there are a few possible causes.

Dirt and debris are among the most common culprits behind PlayStation 5 HDMI port issues. If any substance builds up inside your HDMI port, it may disrupt your video and audio connection.

Bent, broken, missing, or damaged HDMI cable pins can also cause problems. If you struggle to plug in your HDMI, the pins may be misaligned, creating connection errors.

In some cases, the HDMI port itself may have gotten damaged. In addition, the HDMI chip on your console’s motherboard may not be working, which may be the case if the chip itself is faulty or your entire system is overheating.

Software issues like outdated firmware can cause connection and compatibility glitches between your console and screen.

Last, the issue may not have anything to do with your PS5 at all! Faulty HDMI cables, monitor settings, or outdated firmware can wreak havoc on your connection.

Troubleshoot the Connection

The best place to start troubleshooting is with each part of your HDMI connection.

Check the settings on your TV or monitor to make sure they’re compatible with your PS5’s output. Make sure you’re using the right input source or you’re on the right channel. If you have a Smart TV, check for firmware updates to confirm you’re using your system’s latest version.

Next, check the HDMI cable itself. Look for fraying, damage, bends, or breaks.

It’s always a good idea to use the HDMI 2.1 cable that came with your PS5, as it’s an ultra-high-speed version of HDMI. If this cable isn’t working, switch to a different cable to see if something is wrong with the cord itself.

Take a look at your HDMI port. If you see dust, debris, or any foreign objects inside, clear it away.

You can grab a compressed air duster if you’re struggling to clean the port. A cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol can also do the trick.

Check Your Console

If the connection isn’t faulty, it’s time to look at your console. Restart it, if you haven’t already done so, by turning it off and unplugging the power cord for a minute before plugging it back in. This can sometimes fix small software issues.

To rule out other software bugs, you should update your console as well, as the latest updates may patch any glitches you’re experiencing. To do this, go into your settings and select System > System Software > System Software Update.

If you’ve set up HDR (High Dynamic Range) on your PS5, note that this setting can sometimes affect your HDMI connection. To rule this out as a culprit, go into your settings and select Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR. Toggle the setting off.

Next, try booting in Safe Mode for further troubleshooting.

To do this, turn off your PS5, then press and hold the power button for a few seconds until you’ve heard two beeps. Press the PS button on your controller, then select the option Change Video Output from the safe mode menu. Selecting HDCP 1.4 Only from the settings can sometimes help address small PlayStation 5 video issues, so restart your console to see if this has helped.

As a last resort, you can also reset your PS5. This restores all of the system’s default settings, but it also deletes your save data. You can back up these files if you subscribe to PlayStation Plus, but you’ll be out of luck otherwise.

Get Professional PlayStation 5 Repairs

If all else fails, expert help may address whatever issues are plaguing your HDMI connection.

As long as you’ve bought your PS5 within the past year, your system is likely still under Sony’s warranty. Contact them for repairs through their support portal, as they’ll often be able to fix the issue for free.

If you bought your PS5 a while ago, you’ll need to contact a third-party expert for your repairs. Experienced technicians can address hardware and software issues affecting your connection and other common errors, and they can also help walk you through any of the steps above if you’re struggling to find the root cause of your problem.

They’re also your best bet if you need an HDMI port replacement: this is tricky work that requires micro-soldering equipment. Though you can find repair kits for HDMI ports online, we don’t recommend trying a DIY job!

Get Help When a PlayStation 5 HDMI Port Is Not Working

The PS5 is an advanced piece of modern engineering, but that doesn’t mean its ports are always error-free. If your PlayStation 5 HDMI is not working, troubleshooting the connection can get frustrating fast.

PS5 Controller Repair: What’s It Cost (And Where Can I Get It Done)

According to some sources, the PS5 has sold more than 46 million units worldwide. These systems are still in high demand even years after their launch, with consoles being snatched up within minutes of hitting shelves.

If you’re one of the millions who got their hands on a console, you may have noticed some issues with the controller. The PS5 DualSense controller has been known to suffer from some common issues.

When it comes to PS5 controller repair, diagnosing the issue is crucial. Read on for a quick guide on what sort of problems you may find in your controller. We’ll also look into the costs of PS5 repair services and controller replacements.

Common PS5 Controller Repair Issues

Like most gaming controllers, there are some common issues with a PS5. Here are some of the most common problems you may run into.

Joystick Drift

PlayStation controllers are well-known for joystick drift. It’s such a common problem that you almost certainly saw the term while searching for fixes for your PS5 controller. You may even be struggling with the issue now.

Joystick drift, as the name implies, occurs when a joystick isn’t locked into place in the center as it usually is. Instead, the joystick will drift to the side or sit loosely.

When playing a game, this can cause several issues. Your camera may move without you wanting it to or your character in some games may begin to strafe. Even when it doesn’t affect gameplay, it can affect the tactile feel of your controller.

Joystick drift is often easy to fix. You’ll sometimes need to take the controller apart and adjust the joystick or replace it. PS5 joystick replacement is cheap, easy, and often doable at home, though it’s best to leave any repairs to professionals.

Poor Connection

Most of the PS5 DualSense controller options available are wireless. While you can find some third-party controllers that are wired, these aren’t the standard controllers. As such, you can sometimes deal with connection issues.

The most common connection issue is for your controller to lose connection while in use. In some cases, this can make gameplay impossible. If you’re using your controller for viewing media, it can make navigation frustrating.

You should first check if the controller is charged. Controllers can struggle to connect if they’re running low on battery.

Otherwise, make sure there’s a clear line of sight between your console and controller. Consider moving closer to your PS5 as well, as distance can worsen connections.

If you’ve tried the above and nothing is working, the interior of your controller could be damaged. You should try to clean the wireless connectors first, as dirt or dust can impede the signal. Should this fail, bring your controller in for repairs.

Stuck Buttons

Another controller issue you may run into is stuck buttons. Stuck buttons can occur on any controller, but are more common on older ones.

As you use a controller, the buttons can wear down. Over time, this can lead to the buttons sticking when you press them down.

In many cases, the cause isn’t mechanical failure but rather a dirty controller. Dirt and grit can get between the buttons, making it so that there’s less room between the controller housing and the buttons. As a result, those buttons grind and stick when pressed down.

Solving this is simple, as you only need to clean your controller. Make sure you’re cleaning them properly instead of using too much water. Your controller is still an electronic device, and some chemicals can damage it.

In rare cases, you may need to unscrew your controller to properly clean it. If you do, make sure you store your pieces in an organized fashion. Doing so will make putting the controller back together simpler.

PS5 Controller Blinking White

If your controller is blinking white, this is one of the easiest issues to fix. It almost always means that your controller is low on battery.

To check, simply plug your controller into its charging port for a while. Let it charge to full and try to use it again.

If the controller is functioning now, that means your problem is solved. However, if the light returns, that means there are connection issues.

Navigate to settings, then accessories, then Bluetooth accessories on your PlayStation. Disconnect and reconnect your controller from here to reset the connection. That will fix any software issues.

Part Replacement

Ultimately, if a part of your controller is damaged, you’ll need to purchase a replacement.

Most components of your controller are cheap. An average PS5 DualSense controller costs around $75 from most official retailers. If you’re ever paying more than that for a replacement part, you’re being ripped off and should not make that purchase.

Common pieces to replace are the joysticks, thumbpads, and battery. You can also purchase spare batteries instead of full controllers for easy swapping.

Seeking Repairs

If you’ve chosen to repair your controller, how much should you expect to spend? Here are the two main factors in repair costs.

Common Costs

Since controllers have a set price, you should always expect repairs to cost less than the controller. If not, it’s difficult to justify paying for the repairs if a new controller is cheaper.

Here at Fruit Fixed, we pride ourselves in our price matching. We can match or beat the pricing of any other repair outlet in Virginia. You can rest assured you’re getting the lowest repair costs in our stores.

Where to Repair

Bringing your controller to a reputable shop is crucial. Less reliable shops may use bad parts and leave your controller needing more repairs.

Pay attention to reviews and how much business a store receives. You can view our testimonies to see what customers have to say about our services.

Repairing Your Controller

PS5 controller repair services are typically low-cost, and our prices are impossible to beat. If you find a lower price at one of our competitors, let us know and we’ll happily match or beat their price.

For help with your controllers today, find our Virginia outlet closest to you. We bring more than a decade of expert experience to your needs.

Get Back 2 Gaming: How to Troubleshoot and Fix a Broken PS5

The PS5 has come a long way since its slew of early issues upon launch. Thanks to a huge range of patches, gamers no longer have to worry about crashes and bricked consoles quite as often – but that doesn’t mean it never happens.

If you’re struggling with a broken PS5 in 2024, your problems are likely to be less damaging. Glitches during gameplay, a frozen screen, power issues, frequent crashes, overheating, and error codes may not brick your device, but they can still put a damper on your fun! Whether you’re dealing with a software or hardware problem, here are a few ways to troubleshoot some of the most common causes of a broken PS5.

Look for Connection Issues

We get it: when you notice issues with your PS5, it’s easy for your mind to jump to the worst-case scenario. However, it’s also possible that you’ve overlooked a simple problem that’s messing with your system.

Check the power supply for your system, especially if you’re dealing with PS5 overheating issues or your console won’t turn on.

Is everything plugged in as it should be? If you have access to another power cord, try that one instead.

At a minimum, you should always try unplugging your power cord, waiting a few seconds, and then plugging it back in to see what happens. You might also want to switch to a different outlet or power strip in case the power source is the cause of your problems.

If you’re having PS5 video issues, check your HDMI cable while you’re inspecting your other connections. Try swapping HDMI cables to make sure you’re using an undamaged cord, and make sure each end has a secure connection to its port.

Try Rebooting

Sometimes, a manual reboot can clear out any bugs that have your PS5 crashing. To do this, hold down the power button on your PS5 for 15 seconds. The console should restart on its own.

This is especially helpful if your console refuses to turn on after it’s gone into Rest Mode. Once you’re back in the system, you might want to disable Rest Mode. This mode conserves power, but it’s also been historically buggy, so try going without it if you can.

If you’re struggling to make your console start up even though it’s clearly powered on, you may need to power cycle the system. Hold down the power button until the LED stops blinking. Remove the power cord, leave the console alone for 30 minutes, then plug it back in and try starting it again.

Launch in Safe Mode

Just like a desktop or laptop, your PS5 has a Safe Mode feature that lets it launch using only basic functions. This allows you to troubleshoot potential issues.

To reboot in Safe Mode, turn the console off, then hold down the power button for three seconds or until you hear a second beep. Press the PS button on your controller and reboot the console.

From here, you can perform a manual update of your system’s software using a USB drive. You can also reset the system to factory settings, though this should always be a last-ditch effort to fix your console. A system reset will erase all of your save data, so be sure about your decision!

Work Through Common PS5 Error Codes

If an error code pops up on your screen, you’re in luck: your system is telling you exactly what’s wrong. Sometimes, this extra information can help you resolve your own problem without further issues. Here are some common error codes you may be able to fix on your own:

Error Code CE-100005-6 (Disc Error)

If you get a PS5 disc read error, try deleting the installed game and re-downloading it again. Next, grab a microfiber cloth to clean the disc you’re trying to insert. If this doesn’t work, try using a different game disc to see if that works: the first disk may be damaged, causing a disc error.

Error Code CE-108255-1 (Application Error)

This can sometimes happen if the software you’ve downloaded isn’t up to date. First, try to delete and reinstall your game. If this doesn’t work, launch your console in Safe Mode and select Rebuild Database.

Server and Internet Connection Errors

There are several error codes related to server and internet connection issues:

  • NW-102254-4
  • NW-102265-6
  • WV-109168-5

If your PS5 won’t connect, check the PlayStation Network’s status page and socials to see if the servers are down. Restart your connection using a wired connection, if possible. If you’re using a wireless connection, restart your router and modem, and update your router’s firmware if it’s been a while.

Clean Your PS5

If you’re still getting disc read errors, your system’s fans sound louder than a jet engine, or your PS5 won’t stop overheating during play, a buildup of dust within your console may be the culprit.

Cool down your system by blowing dust from inside it. For a more thorough cleaning, you can also remove the case covers to use canned air inside the system, but you’ll want to be very gentle.

Get Professional Repairs

If you’ve tried the basic steps above to no avail, it may be time to see a pro.

Depending on how new your console is, you may be able to have Sony fix the issue under your warranty. For most systems, the warranty lasts one year. To know if you still qualify for repairs, check out the PlayStation support page.

Xbox One Power Supply Replacement: A Step by Step Guide

Some studies show that as many as two-thirds of North American gamers prefer Xbox over PlayStation and Nintendo. Regardless of who you pick in the console wars, many people purchase an Xbox One for some of its exclusives.

If you own the system, you may have found yourself dealing with some Xbox One power issues. In such a situation, looking into an Xbox One power supply replacement becomes necessary.

But how can you safely and effectively replace your Xbox’s power supply? Read on for a brief guide on how to correctly identify, remove, and replace your console’s power supply.

A Quick Word

Before we go further, you should know this is not a simple task. Many at-home fixes, such as cleaning a disc drive, are relatively quick and easy.

Your Xbox’s power supply is located inside your system. That means you should be comfortable with Xbox One disassembly.

There are also some safety risks when dealing with a console. You must follow any safety measures. These include using the proper tools, ensuring the system is completely powered down before working, and safely discarding any used electronics.

If you aren’t confident in solving your Xbox One power issues, we strongly recommend looking into Xbox repair services. At Fruit Fixed, we’re happy to help you with this task so you don’t damage the system or yourself.

Steps to Removing Your Power Supply

If you’re ready to begin replacing your power supply, follow these steps. We’ll guide you through the disassembly and replacement. Please ensure your system is powered off and unplugged before beginning.

Remove the Sticker

Your first step is to remove the white sticker on the side of your console. The sticker should have the barcode and serial number of the system. We suggest storing this sticker somewhere for identification in case you need it later.

You’re removing this sticker to get to the screw beneath it. You can use blunt tweezers to easily remove the sticker.

Remove the External Screws

With the screws all uncovered, remove the external screws from the back of the Xbox One. These are two 12.6mm screws on the left and right of the console.

As before, ensure you safely store these screws. We recommend using a small bowl to keep them in.

Remove the Upper Case

Once those screws are removed, it’s time to remove the upper case. Pull the front of the case toward the front of the console until it stops sliding. Do not use excess force, or you may damage the console.

With the case out of its clips, rotate the console so that the back is facing you. Lift the left side of the case and pause when you aren’t able to easily lift it any further. Keep this side held and push up on the right side to unhinge it.

Swing the case open to about 70 degrees. Afterward, push it down with a gentle force to remove it from the console. Keep the case in a safe place while you continue.

Carefully Disconnect the Ribbon Cable

Ribbon cables are exceptionally fragile and can be difficult to work with. For some, this may be the most difficult part of the process.

Locate the ribbon cable on the front circuit board. Use a small tool, such as a spudger or even your fingernail, to open the hinged flap on the cable connector.

Once done, gently pull the cable free from the connector. We recommend using blunt tweezers for a sturdy grip.

Remove the Front Circuit Board and Upper Screws

Retrieve your screwdriver again to remove the three screws on the front of the circuit board. One is near the ribbon cable you just removed, while the others are to the left and center.

These are 13.3mm screws, so choose the right screwdriver for the job. As before, store these in a small bowl or alternative safe place.

With the screws removed, pull the front circuit board away from the metal case. You can pull it straight out, but make sure you aren’t pinching the ribbon cord from before. We recommend pulling it evenly from both sides to avoid bending or damaging it.

Remove the Metal Case

Now that the circuit board is out, there are eight screws to remove on the metal case. Six are 47.7mm screws, while the others are 7.5mm screws. Use the correct size screwdriver and store these screws safely.

Afterward, detach the press connector near the corner. A simple spudger can lift the connector up and away. Don’t fully remove this connector, as prying open the socket can damage it.

Finally, remove the lower plastic case. You’ll only need to lift it up and away. Beneath, unscrew the lower metal case screws.

Detach the Power Supply

With this disassembly complete, unscrew the power supply and fan. Keep the disc drive steady as you do so, and remove the five screws of varying lengths from the bottom.

Beneath is the power supply and fan. You’ll need to loosen the disc drive, unstick the foam tape near your power supply, and then lift the supply directly upward.

Move the supply carefully so that you can see the cables beneath. Place it aside and remove the fan, which is blocking the plug-ins for those cables.

Remove the Socket

With the fan safely connected and removed, you can remove the power supply’s socket. Install your Xbox OEM power supply and continue to reassemble your system.

To do so, you’ll need to follow the steps you took in reverse order. Keeping your parts organized and documented is crucial to easily following this step.

Xbox HDMI Port Repair: Frequently Asked Questions and Service Guide

Did you know that more than half of all Xbox 360s suffered the fated red ring of death? At a 54% failure rate, it stands as one of the most notable moments of console maintenance in gaming history.

While this issue is mostly solved, Xboxes still have several issues that appear. One of note is issues with the HDMI ports. Xbox HDMI port repair is sometimes necessary and, thankfully, is an easy maintenance task.

If you’re looking into Xbox HDMI issues, we’re here to help. Here are the main symptoms of the problem and the best ways to fix it.

Signs of a Broken HDMI Port

There are several available models of the Xbox, from the original Xbox and the white Xbox 360 up to the most recent model of the Xbox One. However, HDMI ports are the same no matter what device they’re in. You can safely apply our advice here to any model of Xbox.

Poor Video

The first symptom you may see is issues with your Xbox video signal. If your Xbox won’t display, this is another sure sign. But in some cases, you may have the Xbox displaying and the video being low-quality.

An example would be if the colors are off or the video display is fuzzy. Most commonly, this means your port is frayed or close to completely breaking.

That said, in rare cases, you may have a dirty port that’s interrupting video. Investigate the port and your HDMI cable to make sure neither has anything disrupting the connection.

Unstable Port

Another issue you may notice is an unstable port. For this issue, you’ll want to physically investigate the port.

Your port shouldn’t wiggle or move when you’re plugging something in. If it is, something inside has come disconnected.

Attempt to wiggle the port, but be careful not to damage anything. We recommend doing this without an HDMI cord attached. Wiggling the cord is more likely to cause damage.

Signal Dropping

Similar to poor video, your Xbox video signal may drop completely. These occurrences may happen at random when you’re playing or otherwise using your Xbox.

You should check your HDMI cord first, as it’s more likely that the cord is damaged. It’s also a cheaper and quicker fix to replace the cord than to repair the port.

One way to do this is by checking another HDMI port. You should also make sure you aren’t using the wrong HDMI port for input and output.

Bad or No Audio

In the old days, systems connected with AV cords. These were a red, white, and yellow cord that controlled audio and video. Troubleshooting was easier, as these cords had more specific purposes.

With HDMI cords, all of these qualities are in one. While this is better for cable management and ultimately more reliable, it can make troubleshooting harder.

One issue you may run into is that your HDMI cord isn’t delivering audio properly. Typically, this means that your connection isn’t as solid as it needs to be. Make sure your cord is properly seated and replace it if necessary.

Failing to Connect

Finally, an outright failure to connect is indicative of either a failed port or a cable. You should always check the cable first by using it on another device, such as another console or PC.

If the cable is functioning, it’s most likely the port. You should bring it into professional Xbox repair services, to be certain. Other internal issues can cause this problem.

Fixing an HDMI Port

If you can safely diagnose that it’s the HDMI port at fault, how can you fix it? Here are the steps to fixing a broken HDMI port.

Before we go any farther, the port may be fully broken. In this situation, you may need to find Xbox repair services to replace the port completely. Doing so at home is a much more difficult task and requires specialty tools and knowledge.

Cut Power Off

Your first step in working with a console is always to cut the power off. Do so by powering the console down and unplugging it. For extra safety, remove the power cord from the back of the console.

Doing this will prevent any electric shocks. These are dangerous and potentially fatal, so never proceed with the power still connected.

Use Discharge Protection

One issue that PC builders know well is that electrostatic discharge, or ESD, can kill components. When working on something with fragile electric components, you should always use discharge protection.

One popular form is a bracelet that will take static electricity and safely discharge it to a grounded source. You can do this easily by touching a metal surface now and then to discharge your body’s natural static.

Check for Damage

Checking for damage is the easiest task you’ll have in hardware maintenance. Simply look at the port and see if there’s any obvious damage.

In the case of electrical failure such as a power surge, there may be black scorch marks. You also might find broken pins, bent ports, or other signs of visible damage. Make sure you check the cord and discard anything broken.

Tighten the Port

If the port is loose, you should tighten it. Most Xbox models have a screw directly above or below the HDMI port. The screw is typically a small Phillips head screw.

Use the appropriate screwdriver to gently tighten the port back to its factory conditions. Don’t put too much pressure or you may strain the chassis. Doing this step should require no disassembly, so you can safely perform this at home.

Xbox One Not Reading Discs: A Troubleshooting Guide

More than 100 million gamers are using Xbox, with the console being a long-standing staple in the gaming industry. But since the first console in the franchise launched, gamers have been dealing with issues with the Xbox disc drive.

If you’re trying to play your console, how do you handle the issue of your Xbox One not reading a disc? The cause can range from a dirty system to severe damage, so diagnosing it properly is paramount.

If you’re looking for ways to solve your disc drive issues, we’re here to offer our help. Read on for a thorough guide on how to fix your Xbox One’s issue of not reading discs.

Possible Causes of Your Xbox One Not Reading A Disc

There are several possible causes. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to diagnose which problem is causing the symptom.

You should do your best to diagnose the problem before attempting fixes. Some fixes may be overkill, such as buying a new Xbox when the only issue was the disc drive. Others may not solve the problem, such as replacing the disc drive when it was the disc at fault.

Here are the three most common causes of your Xbox One not reading a disc.

Build-Up

Like any system, your Xbox One can take in dust, dirt, and debris. Consoles and PCs often do this as a result of drawing in air for cooling. When this dust is drawn in, it can build up around the disc drive and cause malfunctions.

Thankfully, this is one of the easiest fixes. You only need to find some compressed air and blow out the system to remove the dust.

In extreme cases, you may need to remove the outer shell. However, we don’t recommend doing this unless you’re comfortable taking the console apart. It’s also unlikely your system will have this significant of a build-up without overheating.

Bad Disc

In some cases, it may not be your console’s fault at all. Discs are easily damaged. If you don’t care for them properly, they can get scratched, chipped, or otherwise broken.

The best way to see if this is the issue is to try other discs. If you only have one disc that isn’t readable, the chances are high that it’s the disc at fault and not your system.

In this situation, there’s no fix to your system necessary. You may need to replace the disc, which is a headache in some cases but is ultimately one of the cheaper options you’ll face.

Damaged System

The worst-case scenario is typically that your system is damaged. In some cases, the damage may be to your Xbox disc drive.

If the disc drive – often called an optical drive – is damaged, it may fail to read discs. You may face this issue if your disc drive works sometimes but often fails.

If it fails to read any discs, it’s likely damage to your optical drive. You can have it diagnosed professionally to ensure this is the problem before investing in repairs.

Quick Fixes At Home

Investing in repairs is often intimidating. The financial cost and the time it takes to have your system repaired can feel inconvenient. As such, some home fixes are preferable.

Here are some of the quickest at-home fixes for your system.

Change Power Modes

Your power modes affect several features of your system. These are mostly Instant-on and Energy-saving.

Energy-saving causes your system to draw less power but can impact some features. Instant-on will cause your system to boot quicker but will draw more power.

Power cycling is also a good option from the same menu. Power cycling is effectively a full shutdown and restart of the system. Think of it as a full restart of your PC.

To change the power modes, perform the following:

  1. Press the Xbox button on the Xbox One to open the menu
  2. Navigate to System
  3. Navigate to Settings
  4. Navigate to Power and Startup
  5. Navigate to Power Mode and Startup
  6. In Power Mode and Startup, change to Energy-saving

Once this is done, power cycle your Xbox. You do so by holding the Xbox button down on the console for 10-15 seconds. After the system shuts down, boot it normally.

Reposition the Console

Another common issue is that your disc drive isn’t aligned properly. You can most often encounter this issue if the console is vertical.

Keep your Xbox One horizontal and on a flat, steady surface. If your system is currently vertical, try this first, as it could be the only problem.

Check the Disc

Are you only using one disc? If this is the case, you should try alternative discs.

Doing so will help you diagnose whether the console or the Xbox One is at fault. If you’re unsure where to start, this is the easiest and quickest problem to check.

Reset Your Console

Resetting your console is more than rebooting. Doing this option will reset your Xbox One operating system. To do so:

  1. Navigate to the Home Screen and open Guide by pressing the Xbox button
  2. Navigate to Settings, then All Settings
  3. Select System from the menu on the left
  4. Navigate to Console Info and Updates
  5. Select and confirm Reset Console

On this screen, select “reset and keep my games & apps.” Failing to do so will cause your Xbox to delete your games, applications, and all saved data.

In some cases, you may prefer this. You may know this by the term “factory reset.” In most cases, gamers don’t want to delete all of their information.

Seeking Professional Repairs

If all of these fixes fail, we recommend bringing your Xbox One to a professional repair. There’s likely an issue beyond what you can diagnose at home.

Keeping Your System Running

If your Xbox One is not reading a disc, the problem is often simple. Check for dust build-up and make sure the disc isn’t broken.

What to Do When Your Switch Controller Is Not Connecting

Nintendo’s Joy-Cons have been a minor revolution in the gaming world. Sure, they may have their fair share of problems – including pesky drift issues that Nintendo is paying for to this day – but they make up for it in spades. Allowing total freedom to jump from console to handheld mode, change up your controller setup, and even use the devices with any arm positioning, it’s hard to beat these tiny controllers.

However, the connectivity of Joy-Cons and similar controllers can sometimes be finicky, making it difficult to dive into your favorite game. What can you do when your Switch controller is not connecting?

Whether you use a Joy-Con, a Pro Controller, or a third-party device, there are plenty of ways to troubleshoot communication issues with your Switch. Here are the best tactics for re-establishing your connection.

Disable Airplane Mode

Airplane Mode can be a great tool at the right time. This mode removes your Nintendo Switch’s ability to use Bluetooth or check the internet, which can speed up a slow device and make games boot up faster.

However, because Airplane Mode turns off your device’s Bluetooth connections, your Nintendo Switch may not be able to communicate with its Joy-Cons. Attaching and connecting them can become impossible if you’ve toggled this mode on, either on purpose or by accident.

To disable Airplane Mode, use a second Joy-Con that’s still connected or tap the touchscreen to access the System Settings. On the side menu, select Airplane Mode and switch it to Off.

Disable Other Bluetooth Devices

In rare cases, other Bluetooth devices may interfere with your Joy-Con’s use of Bluetooth. If you have a wireless headset paired with your switch, for example, your connectivity issues may stem from that device. Try disabling all Bluetooth devices except for your Joy-Con to see if it fixes the problem.

If you’re having issues with all of your Bluetooth devices, make sure your Bluetooth is on. If you can’t figure out the connection issue, console repair might be your best bet.

Check the Controller’s Line of Sight

If it seems like your Joy-Con is connected in some ways but not others, it’s possible the controller doesn’t have a clear line of sight to the console. When furniture, glass, or metal sits between the Joy-Con and its associated Switch, the Bluetooth connection may become faulty. Get closer to your console and see if your controller’s performance issues go away.

Check the Number of Connections

If you’re playing with a large party of people, you may be trying to connect too many controllers to your Switch. The Nintendo Switch supports up to eight wireless controllers at a time. This includes both Joy-Cons and third-party controllers.

Reconnect the Controller

If you aren’t using your Nintendo Switch in handheld mode, try reconnecting the controller. This forces the console to reconnect with your Joy-Con.

This can be especially important if your household has multiple Nintendo Switches, as your controller may be paired with the wrong device. If you haven’t re-paired your controllers since the Switch’s 12.0.0 update, it can also help address possible pairing issues.

To go a step further, try un-pairing and re-pairing your Joy-Con. To do this, go to System Settings again. Next, choose Controllers and Sensors > Disconnect Controllers. You’ll need to hold down the X button on your Joy-Con to un-pair it.

To re-pair the Joy-Con, all you need to do is slide it onto the Switch again.

If you’re using a Pro Controller, you may need to perform an extra step to establish your connection. In System Settings, head to Controllers and Sensors > Pro Controller Wired Communication. Make sure the checkbox is selected to allow your controller to connect.

Charge the Console and Controllers

If your Switch or Joy-Cons have a low battery, you may experience connection issues.

You can see the battery life of your console in the top-right corner of your screen on the home menu. To check the controller batteries, select the Controllers button at the bottom of the home menu.

Attach your controllers to the Switch and allow the entire system to get a full charge. Make sure your Joy-Cons are fully attached: you should hear a small “click” once they’ve slid into place. If your devices still won’t charge, address any charging port issues or switch to a different charger.

Do a System Update

System updates can help fix minor bugs with your console. Your device should be set to download updates automatically, but you can also check for a new one by heading to System Settings again. From there, select System > System Update. If an update is available, the download will start automatically, and your device will restart.

If you have a pending update, your Switch will ask if you’re ready to update every time you try to start a game. If you’ve been putting off an update, try it now to see if it fixes your Joy-Con issues.

Restart Your System

Even if you don’t have a fresh system update, restarting your device is a smart move. This can help clear temporary issues that might be blocking your Joy-Con connection.

To restart a Switch, hold down the power button on the top of the console for at least three seconds. This should bring up a power menu. Select Power Options > Restart, and allow the device to reboot before checking your controller’s connection.

Reset the Controller

You can also reset each Joy-Con to clear out potential issues. To do this, detach the controllers from the console. You should see a small, pin-sized button on the side of the controller that connects to the Switch.

Press this button to sync your controller and your console. Then, press any other button on the Joy-Con to restart it.
