It’s hard to believe the Apple Watch originally launched as a fashion piece. Landing on fashion spreads and netting A-list celebrities as models, the Apple Watch was all about luxury.
Today, these sleek devices still look great on your wrist, but they’re also packed with a host of powerful features in a tiny package.
That’s why an Apple Watch not ringing can be so frustrating. Modern versions of these devices are all about convenience, and there’s nothing less convenient than missing important calls!
If you’re dealing with this annoying issue, don’t stress: here are some troubleshooting tips to help you get re-connected in no time.
Check Your Phone
Is your phone getting calls? If you haven’t already done so, have a friend do a test call. If your iPhone doesn’t ring, you’ll have to troubleshoot call issues first. Your phone needs cellular service or a stable Wi-Fi connection to get notifications.
While you’re looking at your iPhone, double-check the Silence Unknown Callers setting. You can find this in Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers. If you’ve only missed Apple Watch notifications from unknown numbers, this might be why.
Turn Off Do Not Disturb
Have you turned on Focus? This is Apple’s version of the Do Not Disturb feature, and it can cause your Apple Watch to silence your device.
Check by looking at your Apple Watch’s Control Center, which you can access by swiping up on your Watch Face. If the crescent moon icon is selected, Focus is on. Unselect it to get your Apple Watch to ring again.
While you’re looking at the Control Center, check to make sure Airplane Mode is not switched on either.
Turn Your Notifications On
Your Apple Watch might not ring or vibrate if you have your notifications switched off.
To configure your notifications, grab your iPhone and open the Apple Watch app. On the My Watch tab, select Notifications. If you have Notification Privacy turned on, your Apple Watch may not alert you to incoming calls.
To be sure you’re receiving all of the notifications your phone does, select Mirror My iPhone.
Check Your Apple Watch’s Volume
If you’re getting notifications on your Apple Watch but aren’t hearing an alert, make sure you haven’t lowered the device’s volume by accident.
To do this, head to Settings > Sounds & Haptics. There, you’ll find a slider for your volume, which you can toggle louder by moving it to the right. Make sure the option for Silent Mode is off.
Unlock Your Apple Watch
Even if all of the settings above are correct, your Apple Watch may not make any audible alerts if the device is locked.
If you see a lock icon at the top of the screen, you may need to enter your passcode before you can see any notifications. Try turning your passcode off by heading to Settings > Passcode > Turn Passcode Off to see if it helps.
You should also go to Settings > Passcode > Wrist Detection and turn the wrist detection feature on. This setting locks your Apple Watch anytime you take it off your wrist. After you put it back on, the watch won’t unlock until you’ve put the passcode in, which means you won’t hear ringing from a phone call.
Restart Your Apple Watch and iPhone
Restarting devices can sometimes help if a minor system issue is the culprit.
To restart an Apple Watch, hold down the button on the side. After a few seconds, you should see a power slider on your screen. Drag the power icon to the right to turn off your phone, wait a few seconds, and hold down the side button again to restart the device.
To restart an iPhone, you’ll need to follow different instructions for different devices. However, on the most recent models, the steps are identical to the steps above. With any model, you can also go to Settings > General > Shut down.
Update Your Apple Watch and iPhone
For the same reasons you should update your Mac, iPhone and Apple Watch software updates might help. It’s possible that a minor bug has caused your Apple Watch’s notification issues, so updating these devices may ensure there are no problems with the connection.
To perform a software update, head to your Apple Watch’s settings or use the My Watch tab in your iPhone’s Apple Watch app. In either case, you’ll tap General > Software Update, then follow the instructions on your screen.
Check Your Apple ID
Your Apple Watch will only communicate with your phone as intended if you’re using the same Apple ID in both places.
If you have a secondhand iPhone or Apple Watch, make sure you’ve updated the login information since your purchase. If you share your Apple ID with a family member and both of you have iPhones and Apple Watches, you might not get the notifications you want!
Unpair and Re-pair Your Devices
Unpairing and re-pairing your Apple Watch and your iPhone might give you a new, clean connection and ensure that your calls ring through on the device you choose.
To do this, head to your iPhone’s Apple Watch app. Under the My Watch tab, choose All Watches and select the info button next to the watch you want to unpair. Choose Unpair Apple Watch at the bottom of the screen.
Choose to keep your cellular plan, then confirm that you want to unpair the device. You may need your Apple ID password to do this.
Pairing your Apple Watch again is easy: your device’s screen should prompt you to find a phone to pair with. Follow the instructions on your screen to pair the device with your iPhone again, and see if this makes your calls ring through on your Apple Watch.
